5 Ways To Become An Online Safety Jedi

Star Wars. It’s one of the greatest trilogies of all time, and if you don’t agree with me I will gladly meet you outside. Yes, I said “trilogies” – the other three movies they made after the originals are dead to me. You can thank a certain character named Jar Jar Binks.

The franchise introduced us to the Force, and the warriors who used it known as Jedis, which in turn coined the notion that anyone who excelled at something, can be referred to as a Jedi. With the world being enthralled in the wonder that is the Internet, one thing we all need to be wary of is security, and hopefully these pointers will help you become a Jedi in online safety.

“The Force is strong with this one.” – Darth Vader

So you think you have a knack for computers? Great, one of the things you should then be most knowledgeable about is online safety. It is easy to be hacked or scammed and have your personal information used against you if you are not too wary of the ways of the online realm. The fact you are reading this article probably means you are well aware of the way things work, so you will not be clicking on any spam links, or installing any dodgy applications, or even offering a Nigerian prince your bank account details in want of some of his fortunes.

“Do. Or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda

The fact you are interested in being safe online means you should do whatever is in your power to keep your personal information safe. Now it may sound monotonous, but when you sign up to websites and social networks, read the terms and conditions, if only so you know your rights in using the website, as this will protect you in the long run. Also ensure that you update your privacy settings to the highest possible levels. If you try to do these things, you may not be as secure as you can be, so just do them and protect yourself.

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.” – Darth Vader

Social networks and websites will try and give you the false sense of security that you do not need to have your security settings set to the highest possible options. The reason your browser and these social networks offer these settings, is to allow you the power to control who can see certain things, and who has access to your personal information. Nowadays, to reset someone’s information and steal their information does not take too much effort (or guessing in this case). These options are there for a reason, so use them.

“I’ll never join you.” – Luke Skywalker

Just because you surf online, does not mean you have to spend your time online alone. There are many great forums and groups online where you can share information, and learn some new tricks from likeminded ‘Jedis’ out in the real world. So do not be wary of these guys, they are there to help, and also offer assistance should you have any questions. They were all young Padawan’s once, learning the ropes and asking what seem to be trivial questions, so they are more than willing to share their knowledge they have learnt over the years to help ease your way into the communities.

“Great, kid. Don’t get cocky.” – Han Solo

So you think you know everything about online security then? Great, but do not get cocky, as the Internet is an ever growing and changing playing field, with new security flaws and scams coming out on a daily basis, obviously due to the growth of the online domain. But also do not give yourself a false sense of security thinking you will never get hacked. Ensure that your firewall is up and make sure you have the best virus protection in place (if only to be your wingman on deadly missions at your computer).

And never forget rule number one as a Jedi: Always turn your lightsaber off before holstering it…
